Objective
The goal of this summer internship was to provide support to the machine learning team as they implemented privacy preserving sensing modalities for human detection, tracking, estimation, and fall detection.
Role
As an intern on the machine learning team, I was responsible for supporting the team's implementation of radar sensing by designing new evaluation metrics for each phase of the pipeline. I was also individually responsible for exploration and initial design of machine learning models to detect humans using thermal data. Finally, I supported integration of these sensors in the data collection and annotation.
Results
I successfully produced deliverables in the radar, thermal, and data collection pipelines. My work will be used for iterative finetuning of the machine learning pipeline for radar detection, and will serve as an initial foundation to extend thermal processing once more data is collected. My supervisors were impressed with my work and I will continue working part time to support further development.
Reflection
This internship was my first experience in a start up environment, and I greatly enjoyed the open ended brainstorming and project design that came with it. I was excited to both collaborate with my peers in the machine learning team on the radar projects, while also leading my own work in thermal sensing. I am exctied to continue this collaboration both as part of my thesis research at MIT, and as a member of the Cherish team.
