Date
December 2019 - February 2019
Location
Philadelphia, PA
Skills
Python, OpenCV, Microsoft Excel
Objective
The goal of this project was to build a program that can identify invasive species of plants through computer vision in order to reduce their spread. The initial prototype used three species invasive to the Wissahickon watershed – Garlic Mustard, Japanese Knotweed, and Japanese Stiltgrass.
Role
This was an independent research project where I was responsible for identifying a topic, performing the tests, and reporting my results.
Results
I presented my project at the Carver Science Fair and won a First Place Medal along with the Geiger Award for Ingenuity.
Reflection
This project taught me how to take a multidisciplinary approach to research, combining both the biological sciences and programming software.
